Doctor Mark F. Olsen is from Mountain Home, Arkansas. He received his undergraduate education at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, and his medical education from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1985. In 1988, he completed his residency in Family Practice in Fayetteville, Arkansas. He also has training in Functional Medicine.
Doctor Olsen has been practicing medicine in northwest Arkansas since 1988. He established his practice in Lowell in 2004. Since that time his focus of practice has been shifting toward serving a clientele who desire a more natural approach to the treatment of conditions caused by the changes in hormone levels that occur in the human body.
Doctor Olsen's goal is to optimize the health of his patients. This is an approach that differs from standard western medicine in that western medicine teaches doctors to primarily diagnose illnesses and then prescribe a treatment for that illness. Treatments generally include prescription medications or surgery. For many acute illnesses, this is entirely appropriate, but for chronic illnesses or problems it is often necessary to evaluate many aspects of a person's lifestyle and health history to decide upon an appropriate plan for treatment or prevention.
Doctor Olsen uses nutritional and hormonal testing to determine the cause for one's medical problems or to determine one's risk for developing specific health problems, such as heart disease, osteoporosis or immune problems.
An area of special interest for Dr. Olsen is hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for both women and men. Doctor Olsen uses only bio-identical hormones, meaning he uses only the exact hormones that women and men make for replacement, rather than hormones from other animals or synthetic mimics of hormones, which do not have the same effects in the body as the hormone being replaced.
